Thermometers: Types, How to Use a Thermometer, and FAQs (2023)
type of thermometer
Below are the different types of thermometers that we use on a daily basis:
Thermometer/Medical Thermometer
laboratory thermometer
Digital Thermometer
infrared ear thermometer
Mercury thermometer
alcohol in glass thermometer
Constant pressure gas thermometer
constant volume thermometer
Platinum Resistance Thermometer
thermocouple thermometer
pyrometer thermometer
thermometer
Clinical thermometers are used for clinical purposes.
It was developed for measuring human body temperature.
It is a long, thin glass tube with a bulb containing mercury at the end.
normal human bodytemperature37°C, fluctuating from 35°C to 42°C. Therefore, the clinical thermometer has a range of 35°C to 42°C.
Mercury levels indicate our body temperature in degrees Celsius.
Since mercury is a toxic element, these thermometers are now being replaced by digital thermometers.
notes:Thermometers must be sanitized before use to allow for a safe, clean inspection.
How to read the thermometer reading?
The thermometer is cleaned with water at room temperature.
It took some jolts. We noticed that yanking lowered the mercury levels. We make sure it stays below the 37°C or 98°F mark of normal human body temperature.
Then place the thermometer under the tongue or under the arm to get a reading on the thermometer.
Then hold the thermometer close to the eye, as shown in Figure 3, to see the correct reading.
Record the temperature difference indicated between the two larger marks. In addition, the number of divisions between these markers (indicated by smaller markers) is also recorded. For example the larger marker reads 10 and the divisor is 5, then each divisor reads a value equal to 10/5 = 20
We note the value of the larger marker that the mercury line crosses (98 in Example 1 of Figure 4). Then record the number of divisions the mercury line crosses (3 in this example). This value is now multiplied by the value of one cell (0.2 in this case). Therefore, the temperature reading is 98 + (3×2) = 98.6.
laboratory thermometer
Since thermometers cannot be used to measure temperature outside of the human body, we need a special type of thermometer for other purposes.
Laboratory thermometers, commonly known as laboratory thermometers, are used to measure temperatures other than body temperature.
The temperature range is -10°C to 110°C.
Laboratory thermometer use:
Designed for laboratory purposes
check boiling point
check freezing point
Check the temperature of other substances.
Check the temperature of the solvent, not the clinical temperature.
Weather reporters also use high and low thermometers to measure the highest and lowest temperatures in a place.

Digital Thermometer
These thermometers measure temperature through an electronic circuit.
The captured information is sent to a microchip for processing and displayed digitally on a digital screen.
They are easy to use, inexpensive and accurate.
A digital thermometer can be considered an advanced thermometer for measuring body temperature.
How to use a digital thermometer?
Turn on the thermometer and click until the number zero appears on the display.
Place the tip of the thermometer under your armpit.
Wait a few seconds, and then you will hear the alarm beep from the thermometer.
Remove the thermometer and check the temperature on the display.
After use, clean the tip of the thermometer with cotton and rubbing alcohol.
infrared ear thermometer
Checking body temperature using the inside of the ear is calledTympanic temperature。
This method is common when it is time to take a child's temperature because it is quick.
Infrared thermometers capture temperature in the form of infrared energy emitted by a heat source.
How to use an infrared ear thermometer?
The tip of the thermometer should be placed in the ear, pointing towards the nose.
The power button on the thermometer should be pressed until a signal is heard.
Read the temperature value.
Remove the thermometer from the ear and clean the tip with cotton wool and rubbing alcohol.
Make sure the thermometer is not used on ears that contain a lot of wax.
Thermometers such as mercury thermometers, glass alcohol thermometers, constant pressure gas thermometers, and platinum resistance thermometers are all designed based on technology.
Watch the video below to learn how temperature affects things around us
Mercury thermometer
These thermometers are not used in some departments because they are easily broken.
Mercury is a toxic liquid that can be a health hazard.
Mercury thermometers are used to give accurate temperature readings.
It is used to take armpit, oral and rectal temperatures.
alcohol in glass thermometer
These are thermometers made of sealed glass.
Glass alcohol thermometers show temperature by how much mercury or alcohol reaches the mark.
Temperature is indicated by a change in liquid.
Because of the danger of contact with mercury, the alcohol in glass thermometers has colored alcohol.
Constant pressure gas thermometer
Constant pressure gas thermometers work under constant pressure and volume conditions.
Constant pressure gas thermometers provide high accuracy measurements and are used to regulate other thermometers.
Constant volume gas thermometer
In a constant volume gas thermometer, the pressure increases as the temperature increases.
The constant volume gas thermometer measures temperatures in the range 0k to 500k.
Platinum Resistance Thermometer
Platinum resistance thermometers use a platinum wire connected to a resistance to measure temperature.
Typically, these thermometers are used to measure the outside temperature.
Platinum resistance thermometers are slow but give accurate readings.
As the temperature increases, the resistance of the material in the thermometer increases.
Platinum resistance thermometers measure temperatures in the range of 500 K to 2300 K.
As the temperature increases, the resistance of the material in the thermometer increases. Platinum resistance thermometers measure temperatures in the range of 500 K to 2300 K.
thermocouple thermometer
These devices are used to measure temperature quickly.
It is used in laboratories.
Resistors are used in devices to generate a voltage that varies according to the temperature of the connection.
It also measures temperatures in the range of 500K to 2300K.
pyrometer thermometer
The thermometer operates according to Stefan's law.
This device measures the temperature of the thermal radiation emitted by an object.
These thermometers can be used without touching an object.
Pyrometer thermometers measure temperatures greater than 2000 K.
What are the properties of alcohol used in thermometers?
The following are the properties of alcohol for thermometers:
The freezing point should be below -112°C.
The boiling point should be 78°C.
The color of the alcohol should be bright.
It should be a good thermal insulator.
Measuring high temperatures should be possible.
Q2
How do I know if a thermometer is accurate?
To check that the thermometer is accurate, we need to plunge the stem of the thermometer into the ice water so that the stem is at least an inch deep but not touching the glass. Wait a minute or less for the thermometer to register a reading of the ice water. A thermometer is said to be accurate if it reads 32°F or 0°C.

Who is the father of the thermometer?
Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit is considered the father of the thermometer. He was a German physicist who devoted his life to science and invention. The modern mercury thermometer was invented by Fahrenheit. He is also credited with inventing the mercury-in-glass thermometer.

Why is mercury a good choice for a thermometer?
Mercury is liquid at room temperature and has the highest expansion coefficient. Therefore, even the slightest temperature change is worth noting. Additionally, the boiling point of mercury makes it suitable for measuring higher temperatures. Another reason for using mercury in thermometers is that it does not stick to glass surfaces and has a shiny appearance.
