Microsoft Build brings AI tools to the forefront for developers - Official Microsoft Blog (2023)

You only need two simple letters to accurately convey this year's major shift in tech:one and me.However, beyond these letters lies a complex, ever-evolving and exciting way in which we work, communicate and collaborate. As you'll see, artificial intelligence was a common thread when we started Microsoft Build,Our annual flagship event for developers.

It has been a landmark year for the industry since January, when we announced the extension of our partnership with OpenAI to accelerate AI breakthroughs and ensure those benefits are shared broadly with the world. In February, Microsoft announced the launch of its new AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge browser to transform the world's largest software category -- search.

Since then, development has accelerated rapidly, with several key milestones along the way, including:

  • greater availabilityAzure OpenAI ServiceAdded support for ChatGPT and OpenAI's groundbreaking GPT-4 model.
  • co-pilotWide range of users, including Dynamics 365 Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Copilot for Power Platform.
  • Expand new AI-powered Bingto the Windows 11 taskbar, mobile devices, and Skype; Bing Image Creator chat; and a full open preview of the platform with no waitlist required.

This is just the beginning of a new era of artificial intelligence. that's whymicrosoft buildis so important. In this event, we'll demonstrate how AI is redefining what and how developers build, and how AI is changing the way work will be done in the future.

Before we get into the news, let's talk about two concepts we discussed in detail during Microsoft Build:co-pilotandplug-in.

Copilot is an application that uses modern artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 to help people complete complex tasks. Microsoft first introduced the concept of Copilot about two years ago with GitHub Copilot, an AI paired programmer who assists developers in writing code, and we continue to ship Copilot across many of the company's core businesses.

We believe Copilot represents both a new paradigm for AI software and a profound shift in the way software is built—from imagining new product scenarios to user experience, architecture, the services it uses, and how to think about security.

Plugins are tools first introduced for ChatGPT and more recently Bing that enhance the capabilities of AI systems, allowing them to interact with application programming interfaces (APIs) from other software and services to retrieve real-time information, incorporate companies and other business data, perform new types of computation, and act securely on behalf of users. Think of plugins as connections between your co-pilot and the rest of your digital world.

With that being said, let's take a look at the news and announcements we make during Microsoft Build.

Growing the AI Plugin Ecosystem

Microsoft isAnnounceWe will adopt the same open plug-in standard that OpenAI introduced for ChatGPT, enabling interoperability across ChatGPT and the breadth of Microsoft Copilot products.

Developers can now useoneThe platform builds plugins for consumer and enterprise interfaces, including ChatGPT, Bing, Dynamics 365 Copilot, and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

If you want to develop your own plugins and use them with AI applications built on Azure OpenAI Service, by default it will interoperate with the same plugin standards. This means developers can build experiences that enable people to interact with their applications using the most natural user interface (human language).

As part of this shared plugin platform,Bing is adding support for plugins. In addition to the previously announced plugins for OpenTable and Wolfram Alpha, we will also be offering plugins for Expedia, Instacart, Kayak, Klarna, Redfin, and Zillow in the Bing ecosystem.

In addition to the general plugin platform, Microsoft also announced that Bing will be joining ChatGPT as the default search experience. ChatGPT will now have a world-class built-in search engine with more up-to-date answers accessible through the web. Answers are now based on search and web data and include citations so users can learn more directly from chat. Starting today, the new experience is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, and free users only need to enable a plugin to use it.

Developers can now extend Microsoft 365 Copilot with plugins

TooAnnounceDevelopers can now use plugins to integrate their apps and services into Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Add-ins for Microsoft 365 Copilot include ChatGPT and Bing add-ons, as well as Teams messaging extensions and Power Platform connectors—enabling developers to leverage their existing investments. Developers will be able to easily build new plugins for Microsoft 365 Copilot using the Microsoft Teams Toolkit for Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio. Developers can also extend Microsoft 365 Copilot by bringing their data into Microsoft Graph, linking relevant and actionable information with the recently announcedCopilot Semantic Index.

More than 50 add-ons from partners including Atlassian, Adobe, ServiceNow, Thomson Reuters, Moveworks, and Mural will be available to customers as part of the early access program, with thousands more available for general availability of Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Building together responsibly

At Microsoft, we've been working to develop AI technologies that have beneficial impact and earn trust, while also sharing our own lessons learned and building new tools and innovations that help developers and businesses implement responsible AI technologies into their own work and organizations. AI practice. On Build, we introduced several new updates, includingAzure AI Content Security,New Azure AI serviceHelping businesses create safer online environments and communities. As part of Microsoft's commitment to building responsible AI systems, content security for Azure AI will be integrated into Microsoft products, including Azure OpenAI service and Azure Machine Learning.

We also introduced new tools for Azure Machine Learning, including the extensionResponsible AI Dashboard supports text and image data,In preview, enables users to evaluate large models built with unstructured data during the model building, training, and/or evaluation phases. This helps users identify model errors, fairness issues, and model interpretations before deploying the model for higher performing and fair computer vision and natural language processing (NLP) models. andPrompt process, coming to preview soon, provides a simplified experience for hinting, evaluating, and tuning large language models. Users can quickly create prompted workflows that connect to various language models and data sources, and evaluate the quality of their workflowsGrounding etc. measurementChoose the best tip for their use case.Prompt flow also integrates with Azure AI Content Security to help users detect and remove harmful content directly in their workflow.

Additionally, Microsoft announcedNew Media Source AbilityRolling out in the coming months, Microsoft Designer and Bing Image Creator will allow users to verify whether an image or video was generated by AI. The technology uses cryptographic methods to tag and sign AI-generated content with metadata about its origin.

introduce Microsoft Fabric, a new unified analytics platform

Today's world is awash with data, constantly flowing from the devices we use, the apps we build, and the interactions we have. Now, as we enter a new era defined by AI, that data is even more important. Powering an AI experience for a given organization requires a constant supply of clean data from well-managed and highly integrated analytics systems. But most organizations' analytics systems are a maze of specialized and disconnected services.

Microsoft Fabricis a unified analytics platform that includes data engineering, data integration, data warehousing, data science, real-time analytics, application observability, and business intelligence, all connected to a single data repository called OneLake.

It enables customers of all skill levels to experience a variety of capabilities in a single, unified experience. It infuses Azure OpenAI services at every layer to help customers unlock the full potential of their data and enable developers to harness the power of generative AI to find insights in their data.
