AWS Storage Pricing Comparison: Which Service Is The Cheapest? (2023)

AWS Storage Pricing Comparison: Which Service Is The Cheapest? (1)

AWS has a number of services for storing data, sufficient for most use cases, all of which have different pricing models. We'll explain each one, what you'll use them for, and how much they'll cost you.

Before we dive in, it should be noted that the exact price of each tier may vary slightly depending on your region. This guide is forus-east-1(Northern Virginia), which is the largest (and therefore cheapest) AWS region. We'll link to pricing resources for each service, so you can see if prices vary in your area.

S3—$0.023 per GB, general purpose storage

AWS Storage Pricing Comparison: Which Service Is The Cheapest? (2)

S3is Amazon's general-purpose object storage service. You can upload any type of file into a "bucket" where all your data is stored. You can organize these using folders like a filesystem, and even though S3 isn't really a filesystem, it works like one.

The S3 is 99.999999999% durable, which is aridiculous numbersTheir marketing department conceived of it as a fancy way of saying that your data is replicated and stored in a very durable RAID array. In the event of (inevitable) drive failure, the array can be quickly rebuilt and new drives provided. Your data is virtually 100% safe in S3, save for simultaneous data center fires and giant meteors. In fact, the most likely way your data will be deleted is through user error, or a billing issue that resulted in account deletion.

S3 buckets can be large, so they are a very scalable solution for storing large numbers of objects. For example, if your application allows users to upload photos, storing them in S3 is much better than using standard EBS storage running EC2. You can use AWS' CloudFront CDN to serve S3 content, making it ideal for media storage. You may also want to use Lambda to automatically compress uploaded images or videos first to save storage space.

Standard tier costs for S3$0.023 per GB,It's pretty cheap compared to EBS and EFS. If you store more than 50 TB per month, the next 450 TB will be$0.022,Saves you a dollar per terabyte. Anything over 500 TB is charged by$0.021,Saved another $1 per TB.

S3 also charges for usage. $0.70 per TB for read data and standard for data transferred from S3 to the Internet$0.09 per GB.If you are only transferring within AWS, the cost is$0.02 per GB,and discounted to$0.01 per GBIf you are transferring data tous-east-1(Northern Virginia).

Tiered storage saves money

S3 is a tiered storage system; certain objects in your bucket can be marked as "infrequently accessed" and only cost$0.0125 per GBStorage at an 83% cost savings over standard storage. However, to offset this savings, reading data from infrequent storage is 13 times more expensive than standard storage, at$10 per TB.It is intended for infrequently accessed data.

S3 has a service called "Smart Tiering" that automatically moves your objects between tiers. This can save you a lot of money if you have many objects that are not accessed frequently. Smart Tiering is a paid service, costing$0.0025 per 1,000 objectsMonitored monthly by the service. However, if you have a large bucket, you'll probably save a lot, so the cost is negligible.

Additionally, S3 has a separate feature called Glacier for long-term archiving, described below.

In summary, S3 costs:

  • $0.023 per GBstored in standard tier
    • $0.0007 per GBData read from the standard layer
  • $0.0125per GB stored in infrequently accessed tier
    • $0.0100 per GBData read from the infrequently accessed layer
  • $0.09 per GBData transmitted to the Internet
  • $0.02 per GBData Transferred to Most AWS Regions
    • discounted to$0.01 per GBif transferred tous-east-1(Northern Virginia)

S3 Glacier — $0.004 per GB for slow archive retrievals

AWS Storage Pricing Comparison: Which Service Is The Cheapest? (3)

(Video) AWS Pricing Calculator & Cost Estimate Tutorial

glacierIs a subset of S3 for archiving data for long-term storage. just spend$0.004 per GB,This is more than twice as cheap as S3 Infrequent Access. However, the cost savings comes with a problem. Retrieving data is slow, taking hours unless you're willing to pay extra to speed up the process.

If you really need to get data fast, you can use Expedited Retrieval, which returns data in minutes for a premium fee. This is the fastest option, and it clearly shows what Glacier is for -- you can't serve user-facing content from it (unless you're AOL).

If it's less urgent, you can use Standard Retrieval, which returns data within 5-12 hours. If you retrieve a large amount of data and don't care when to retrieve it, but just want to keep the cost as low as possible, you can use Bulk Retrieval, which takes 12-48 hours.

The cost of each retrieval layer is:

  • $0.01 per GBstandard retrieval data, plus$0.05 per 1000 requests
  • $0.03 per GBAccelerated retrieval of data, plus$10.00 per 1000 requests
  • $0.0025 per GBRetrieve data in batches, plus$0.025 per 1000 requests

Also, if you really need to expedite the retrieval process, you can use the$110.00 each"Provisioned capacity unit."

Glacier also has a second layer called Glacier Deep Archive. This layer is suitable for data that is rarely accessed in a given year. Like S3's infrequent access, it saves storage costs per GB at the cost of retrieval. deep archive cost$0.00099 per GB,The cheapest of all AWS services, retrieval costs are:

  • $0.02 per GBstandard retrieval data, plus$0.10 per 1000 requests
  • $0.0025 per GBRetrieve data in batches, plus$0.025 per 1000 requests

You will also incur a fee to enter the data into Glacier at a cost of$0.05 per 1000 requestsAvailable for Glacier and Deep Archive.

EBS—$0.100 per GB for boot volume

AWS Storage Pricing Comparison: Which Service Is The Cheapest? (4)

Electronic business systemis the backbone of EC2. It is primarily used as a boot volume for EC2 instances. Because you shouldn't be storing large amounts of data this way, EBS costs a lot more than S3. price at$0.100 per GBFor the general-purpose tier, that's more than four times that of S3 and more than eight times that of S3 Infrequent Access.

Obviously, you shouldn't use it to store large amounts of media, but running a simple database on EC2 won't drain your wallet.

There are several different types of EBS, which vary the type of disk attached to the instance, and have different costs:

  • Universal SSD (GP2)—$0.100 per GB.The default for all new instances. Nothing special, just general SSD storage.
  • Provisioned IOPS SSD (IO1)—$0.125 per GB.If you need very fast NVME storage,IO1is an option. it costs more thanGP2per GB, but you also have to pay to keep a fast connection. It depends on the speed you provide, the speed is"$0.065 per Provisioned IOPS"per month.
  • Throughput Optimized Hard Disk (st1)—$0.045 per GB.Standard hard disk storage. These speeds are static: 250 MB/s for 1 TB volumes, up to 500 MB/s for 2 TB volumes.
  • cold hard drive (sc1)—$0.025 per GB.Slower hard drive option. Static speed of 80 MB/s per TB, up to 250

For two hard drive volumes, the minimum size is 500 GB. All EBS volume types have a maximum size of 16 TB, but you can attach additional volumes to each instance after the boot volume, each at the same rate. If the volume is not attached to a running instance, you will still be charged for the data stored in it.

speedGP2andIO1It's a lot more complicated than the space we have here, but if you want to learn more, you can read our guide on how it works.

Additionally, EBS volumes can be backed up to S3 as snapshots. There is a fee for this feature
$0.05 per GB,Usually more expensive than standard S3.

(Video) AWS Storage - EBS vs S3 vs EFS

EFS—per gigabyte, one NAS for your EC2 instance

AWS Storage Pricing Comparison: Which Service Is The Cheapest? (5)

electronic file systemis a special service. It enables you to have a block-level volume like EBS, but attach it to multiple instances and access it from other services. In a sense, it's like a fusion of S3 and EBS; you're storing the entire filesystem, not just objects, but it's highly available and accessible from anywhere. This is very similar to provisioning your AWS account with a NAS.

EFS is more expensive than EBS, in$0.30 per GB.But there is an infrequently accessed tier that costs only 10x less$0.025 per GB,add$0.01 per GBrequested data. This pricing model prioritizes infrequent access, so you should definitely enable it for your EFS volumes.

AWS states that 80% of customer data is accessed infrequently, which makes the effective price of$0.08 per GB,cheaper thanGP2, though your mileage will certainly vary.
